Imagine a sunlit day filled with unforgettable boating and fishing experiences, jumping into cool inviting lake water with childlike abandon, and camping with family and friends under a towering canopy of pine trees. Memorable days like this are made at Huntsville State Park.
Tucked away in the Sam Houston National Forest, the park is home to Loblolly Pine and Shortleaf Pine trees that are common in the East Texas Pine Belt. The park has been made popular by Texas natives for its camping and picturesque lake.
Activities
Camping
There are various campsite options available to accommodate campers of every level and inclination. Several campsites throughout the park offer pinic tables, fire rings for fireside ghost stories and s’more making, water hookups, and restrooms located relatively close to the sites. There are also lantern posts that help campers substitute electric lighting with lamplight. Dogs are allowed as well.
Fishing
Huntsville State Park’s major attraction is Lake Raven, which is fed by three creeks. The lake provides plenty of Largemouth bass, Bluegill, catfish and redear sunfish for “reel” enthusiasts. Regulated as a “Community Fishing Lake” the waters are for catch-and-release fishing only.
Paddling
Canoeing and Paddle Boating are activities that are also enjoyed by campers and day visitors. Boat rentals are inexpensive (prices may vary per season), depending on how long the rental is for.
Horseback Riding
One of the most enjoyable attractions of the park is horseback riding, and has gained popularity over the past few years. However animal friendly the park may be, bringing personally owned horses to the park is strictly prohibited. Privately operated, campers and day visitors must schedule a ride via www.2estables.com.
